Hopfer Day Program
The four 16-week semesters in the Day Program provides the nursing student with a flexible weekday schedule for attending lecture, lab and clinical assignments.
The Day Program is a 2-4 day per week commitment, which entails a 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. weekday clinical requirement.
The program starts annually in late August (Fall semester). Application deadline is March 29, 2010.
REQUIREMENTS
For acceptance as a student, the applicant must demonstrate:
- proof of graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency (GED);
- successful completion (C or better) of one year high school Chemistry or one semester college Chemistry (non-remedial, 4 credits);
- an average of 80 in high school if college course work is not evident;
- official college transcripts indicating a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or better in a least 6 credits of required courses, preferably one science and one humanities (Grades of C or better are required). It is advisable that all science courses are completed prior to entry to reduce workload. (HSON will internally calculate the GPA):
- Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab - 4 credits
- Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab- 4 credits
- Microbiology with Lab- 4 credits
- Nutrition - 3 credits
- Pharmacology - 3 credits
- General Psychology - 3 credits
- Introduction to Sociology - 3 credits
- English 101 - 3 credits
- Bioethics - 3 credits
- submission of all official transcripts from schools previously attended;
- personal integrity and potential for nursing as documented by one reference from a guidance counselor, teacher, employer or member of the clergy, and
- proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency (a.k.a. Green Card)
Applicants educated in a foreign country will need to have their high school and college international transcripts validated by a recognized agency such as the World Education Services. Students who possess a Bachelor’s Degree may have their high school transcript waived. Contact the Admission-Recruiter for further details.
Applicants who have been dismissed for academic or disciplinary cause from the Hopfer School of Nursing or other RN program are ineligible to apply. Effective Fall 2008.
New admission policy goes into affect for August 2011 Day Program admissions and thereafter:
- A minimum of 13 credits required for admission consideration (7-8 credits must be in the sciences).
- C+ or better required.
- TEAS - Version V Entrance Exam.
Entrance Exam
The results on the Entrance Exam is one of the primary factors in determining admission. Upon receipt of all admissions requirements, if required coursework is evident and GPA is 2.7 or higher an invitation will sent for the Nurse Entrance Test (NET). It is strongly recommended that applicants prepare for the NET Exam by ordering a study guide from Educational Resources, Inc. by calling (800) 292-2273 or http://www.eriworld.com/ online practice exams are available. TRANSFER CREDIT
A course for which transfer is requested must be:
- supported by an official transcript
- a comparable course with a grade of C (2.0) or have sufficient content within the required discipline to
- justify “transfer by credit”, and
- validated by a recognized agency such as World Education Services if taken in another country.
Credits by Examination
Hopfer will accept up to 9 credits earned through selected challenge examinations offered by CLEP (College Level Examination Program) and Excelsior College. Inability to achieve a satisfactory grade on the first attempt to challenge will require the student to enroll in the course. The following is the list of the challenge examinations acceptable for transfer:
CLEP Exam – Must achieve a passing grade of 50 or higher Introductory Psychology Introductory Sociology English Composition w/Essay

Prior to acceptance to the School of Nursing:
- The Admission-Recruiter reviews official transcripts for acceptable transfer credits.
- The applicant is informed of the courses that will be credited from outside institutions.
- The applicant is given the option to agree or disagree with the Admission-Recruiter’s decision.
- If the candidate agrees, the transfer courses are entered on the Official Notification of Transfer Credit form.
- If the candidate disagrees and believes more course work should be credited, it is the candidate’s responsibility to supply a course description for the description for the credits in dispute.
- The Admissions Committee will review the course description.
- The candidate receives written notification of the decision by the Office of Admissions.
Sciences (Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Nutrition and Pharmacology) must be taken within 10 years of admission. Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology, taken more than ten years ago may be challenged by examination (Excelsior College). Students must have passed the course with a grade of C or better to be eligible to take a challenge exam. Inability to achieve a satisfactory grade on the first attempt to challenge will require the student to enroll in the course.
Humanities courses (English Composition, General Psychology, Introduction to Sociology and Bioethics) must be taken within 20 years of admission. Courses taken more than 20 years ago may be challenged by examination (CLEP or Excelsior College). Students must have passed the course with a grade of C or better to be eligible to take a challenge exam. Inability to achieve a satisfactory grade on the first attempt to challenge will require the student to enroll in the course. Exception would be those applicants with a Baccalaureate degree.
